If you enjoy the sound of a well calibrated brass choir then this recording is for you. All of the pieces date from the late Renaissance. Some are transcribed for trombones
from original compositions for either choir or strings, but some are original works for trombone. The instruments used by the members of the Stuttgarter Posaunen Consort
are modern-built reproductions of Renaissance trombones.
What is quite remarkable here is the finely-tuned dynamic balance between all eight trombones, almost as if they were breathing as one. Add to this the perfectly matched
organ of the Stiftskirche Neustadt played by Simon Reichert on some of the pieces, and your auditory neurotransmitters immediately take you back 400 years. One piece in
particular, the Salve Regina Terzo by Claudio Monteverdi is breathtaking in its dark and sombre beauty. And the bold Sonata Ottava
by Massimiliano Neri is bright and uplifting. And special mention should go to Benjamin Reichert, the recording producer, for not only a clear reproduction of the ensemble,
but also for capturing the space around the instruments, and the scope of the Stiftskirche Neustadt.
