This marks the 6th time that Riccardo Muti has led the festivities. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, this year's concert took place without a live audience. That must have felt strange to the orchestra members, especially for the long-standing ones who have participated in this perennial event for years. But as usual, this year's concert was broadcast to over 90 countries all over the world and watched by more than 50 million viewers on television. In light of this, conductor Muti delivered a touching address, included on the CD which amongst other things, urges all political leaders to support culture and music in order to sustain everyone's mental health, not only through this ordeal, but for all time. In last year's concert, conductor Andris Nelsons may have had more pep in his step, but Muti brings a bit more of the traditional Viennese spit and polish to the music. Especially in pieces like the Overture to "Poet and Peasant" by Franz von Suppé which includes everything from light galop, through the lyrical and evocative, to highly dramatic orchestral punch. Add this to your collection and may it be an omen of better days ahead! Jean-Yves Duperron - January 2021
