Although back then they would have used the term "Barock Star" (pun intended). Just like today's musicians, these talented minstrels would tour from town to town and strut their stuff. Not only would they demonstrate their superior technial prowess on their instrument of choice, but also thrill the fawning fans with new compositional tricks and styles. The lack of many more recordings featuring the music of these pre-Bach masters may be due to their uncompromisingly strict demands on the performer. Take Johann Georg Pisendel for example. Florid runs and sprightly ornamentation adorn his music. But Dorian Komanoff Bandy, professor of musicology and historical performance at McGill University confidently rises to the occasion and delivers highly spirited and expressive interpretations of this music. He is joined throughout by Hank Knox on harpsichord, and Elinor Frey on viola da gamba. The audio recording itself is a bit on the bright side, which in this case actually enhances the playfully biting character of the baroque violin very well. Baroque music meant to entertain, played accordingly by all parties involved. Jean-Yves Duperron - August 2023 Pisendel Sonata - Scherzando
