As in some previous releases within this series like A Year At Winchester and A Year At Truro to name but two, it seems that the microphone positioning is carefully judged not only to perfectly distance the choir and organ from the listener, but to capture the scope and feel of the building itself. As the title implies, the pieces on this recording span the liturgical year from Advent to All Saints, and are some of the favorites at Llandaff Cathedral, one of the oldest Christian sites in the UK. "The present building dates from the Norman period, around 1120, with further additions and modifications in the later Middle Ages" {Booklet Notes}. Its newest pipe organ, built by Nicholson and Co. in 2010, is considered to be the largest instrument to be built in a British Cathedral by a British builder since the 1960s. From the uplifting power of This joyful Eastertide to the hushed beauty of Gustav Holst's In the bleak midwinter (check your pulse if you don't get goosebumps as it ends), each and every piece on this CD is expressively performed, and projected with a sense of occasion.
