The technical ease of recorder player Sabrina Frey never ceases to impress. And here within her exploration of 18th century works for the
instrument, including world premiere recordings, that flawless technique is first and foremost at the music's service. For example, by effortlessly dispatching the many
leaps and fast descending runs of the Giga Allegro movement from the Sonata by Ignazio Sieber, a German composer and oboe virtuoso who moved to Italy to learn
more about the Flauto dolce (recorder), she really brings out the music's effervescent style. And the same could be said about the exuberant final Allegro
movement from Giacomo Ferronati's Sinfonia, during which Sabrina Frey never seems to come up for air. At the other end of the spectrum she just as easily brings out the
beautiful melodic lines of the Largo from Vivaldi's Sonata.
The audio recording quality itself is exemplary, with both instruments captured at just the right distance for impact as well as ambient sound. And the
sparse effect of the recorder against a single harpsichord, played here with authoritative musicianship by Philippe Grisvard, allows for each and every note to be clearly
heard and defined. If you're a baroque music enthusiast with a special fondness for the recorder, this disc belongs in your collection.
