Now here's a trio of ambitious musicians who have set out to produce their own original arrangements for three guitars of intricate orchestral or keyboard works spanning
centuries and covering the globe. Scott Borg, Adam Levin and Matthew Rohde, collectively known as The Great Necks have managed
to mould and manipulate these well-known pieces and divvy-up the workload amongst three instruments without toning down their complexity and character. For example, they very well capture
and project the Brazilian heat of the Chôros No. 5 and the Cuban sway of the Danzon No. 2. They even seem to highlight the
complex counterpoint of the famous "Dorian" Toccata by Bach. Even the subtle, but yet visionary harmonic progressions of the piano music of Russian composer/pianist
Alexander Scriabin are focused and clear in these arrangements. On the other hand, as far as Finlandia is concerned, they've overstepped their limits. This
orchestral favorite is meant to evoke images of majestic splendour and grandeur, and only the depth of colors and dynamic range of a symphony orchestra can conjure up its power. Even twenty
guitars wouldn't cut it. But they still deserve an A+ for the effort they poured into the arrangement.
If you enjoy guitar music, give this new recording a try. Guaranteed you will hear things you've never heard before.
