Music for the guitar of a different order. Besides the obviously Latin inspired Milonga by Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983), most of the pieces on this new recording by Hungarian musician Zsófia Boros sound like miniature tone pictures, reflecting highly impressionistic moods and imagery. With the exception of French composer Mathias Duplessy (b. 1972), whose music as been described as being "very pictorial", the bulk of the music on this CD is from Argentinian composers and yet, there's a cosmopolitan character to each and every piece.

The highly nuanced and finely expressive playing of Zsófia Boros plays an important role in the overall feel this album impresses on your mind. As Zsófia herself denotes: "My choice of music repertory is intuitive. Pieces of music are like places for me, like spaces that I visit, step into and experience. They all have their own mood and colour, their own scent, their own pulse and a special effect on me. Each place calls for different forms of behaviour in me. Sometimes I am allowed to surrender myself freely to the moment, sometimes I channel a certain pulse and go with it." She allows the music to speak for itself and to unfold naturally. Nothing in her technique sounds affected or fabricated. Her limpid phrasing and finely calibrated dynamic inflections conceal the image of a person plodding away on an instrument. She can effortlessly delineate the melodic line from the music's underlying framework. Through her, the music flows freely as if improvised rather than rehearsed, which is a rare gift amongst today's musicians.

If you enjoy classical guitar music in general, and are looking to hear something different to set a reflective nimbus, this recording can certainly take you there. Highly recommended!
