KARL WEIGL - Symphonies 4 & 6 - Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic - Jürgen Bruns (Conductor) - 845221053851 - Released: November 2019 - Capriccio C5385

When I listen to the music of Austrian composer Karl Weigl (1881-1949), I sometimes discern in certain passages what sounds to me like music Gustav Mahler may have written had he lived longer and focused on the internal mechanisms of symphonic writing rather than trying to evoke the unfathomable. After all Weigl did at some point work for Gustav Mahler under the role of a solo performance coach at the Vienna Court Opera, studied under Zemlinsky, and had Anton Webern as a classmate. I elaborated a bit more on his composition style and technique in this review of his Symphony No. 1. But suffice it to say that somewhat like Erno von Dohnanyi, his charm lies in all the detailed motivic activity and intricate scoring, rather than hyperbolic gestures. His music doesn't dazzle but rather reveals its potency over repeated listening sessions. I don't see evidence to the contrary, but since there are no other recordings available, I will assume that this is the world premiere recording of his Symphony No. 4 in F minor, written in 1936, a time of political turmoil in Austria. Conductor Jürgen Bruns and the Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra make a strong case for the need of a resurgence of interest in this oft-neglected composer. Looking forward to their release of the hitherto unavailable Symphonies 2 and 3, as well as the No. 5 "Apocalyptic".
