Scriabin's Piano Concerto in F-Sharp Minor, Op. 20: I. Allegro) Danza fortaleza: No. 7. Cinderella 2 Russian Pieces - No. 1. Vision - No. 2. Dance of the Skomorokhs Guitar music inspired by a different muse, bringing together disparate elements and facets of guitar-centric composition, and smelting them down to a pure synthesis of form, complex structure, and expressive beauty. Prime examples of this diversity can be found in this composer's grasp of harmonic development as in the evocative Wanderer in Time (audio clip below), or the Latin flavour of Canto e Danza and the deep Russian folk music influence found in the Russian Pieces. Russian born German guitarist and composer Konstantin Vassiliev has dabbled in chamber music but his main creative impulse has always been focused on music for solo guitar. Most of his pieces may be miniatures in size, but they all project a broad and deep foray into the intricate, inner-workings of music written for this instrument, which demand a perfect balance of technique and expressive finesse from the guitarist. If you enjoy classical guitar music but would like to experience music that distances itself from its Spanish roots, listen to these pieces, some of which are world premiere recordings, by Konstantin Vassiliev. I personally was impressed by what he can extract from such an elementary instrument. Jean-Yves Duperron - August 2022
