Just as Franz Liszt displayed an ease for writing brilliant piano transcriptions of orchestral works, Edwin Lemare showed a disposition for writing showstopping pipe organ transcriptions of popular orchestral works. His Wagner and Tchaikovsky transcriptions in particular are quite effective. On this recording, the Blue Danube, Carmen and Poet and Peasant are a thrill to hear. His arrangements preserve the musical essence of the orchestral originals whilst creating a virtuosic showcase for the organist, as well as putting the instrument's colorful tonal palette on full display. The pipe organ selected for this recording is the Mascioni organ op. 632 of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, Novara, Italy, and with its over 50 stops ranging from a 32' pedal stop to a 2' Silvestre in the Swell, is certainly up to the task. Organist Massimo Gabba, specialist in the European romantic repertoire and a Brilliant Classics recording artist since 2013, certainly knows how to alter the instrument's registration to capture and project the proper colors and mood of all the varying segments of each and every piece. If you thought the pipe organ's role was strictly to play a liturgical role within the confines of a church, this CD may very well alter that perception.
