GEORGE ANTHEIL - BALLET MECANIQUE, SERENADE FOR STRINGS -
DANIEL SPALDING (CONDUCTOR) - PHILADELPHIA VIRTUOSI CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Naxos 8.559060
This CD is a good introduction into the world of George Antheil. His reputation was built around the Ballet Mecanique probably because it caused the same kind
of original reaction that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring did. Although the Ballet is a good, challenging work in it's own way, I find the other pieces on this
disc more of an example of Antheil's talent. His style is a blend of Auric, Poulenc and Stravinsky, but with an American sound. The Serenade is quite
delightful, very tonal and tuneful. If you don't know this composer, add this CD to your collection.
