TOMASO ALBINONI - ALBINONI ADAGIO IN G MINOR, PACHELBEL'S CANON,
GRIEG'S HOLBERG SUITE, BARBER'S ADAGIO William Boughton (conductor), English String Orchestra - 710357701924 Nimbus 7019
Ah yes, the famous Albinoni Adagio. I had heard many, many recordings of this piece before and always wondered why everyone considered it
to be such a wonderful work. I always figured it was just a nice piece until I first heard this recording. All the other ones I had heard
were all a little bit anaemic sounding. Boughton conducts at a stately pace, with lush sounding strings, a rich organ sound, grave beauty
with a tinge of melancholy. Now I agree with everyone that it is a wonderful piece of music. All the other works on this cd, the Barber
Adagio, Pachelbel Canon, Holberg Suite by Grieg, etc...are all played with the same love and care and captured in that unique Nimbus sound.
