Here's something you don't see released every day: a collection of miniature, character piano pieces by an obscure Danish composer. Fini Henriques (1867-1940) was immensely popular during his lifetime and greatly admired as a violinist and composer. Most of his output consisted of small, charming, tongue-in-cheek pieces that amused and delighted audiences anywhere they were played, but as the grim 20th century marched forward, that style quickly faded in the background, obliterated by the new world din and clatter. Many of his piano pieces are grouped together into "books" or "suites" as we find here, and as such seem to narrate a tale or story, or paint an aural picture of nature scenes. His "Picture Book", aimed at children, brings to mind Schumann's "Kinderszenen" and projects the same carefree joy and innocence. Concert pianist Christina Bjorkoe captures the charm and wit behind every piece with characterful inference. A delightful collection of rarely heard, light and airy piano pieces perfectly timed to coincide with the lazy days of summer.
