CORELLI & QUENTIN - Flute Sonatas - Anna Besson (Flute) -
Myriam Rignol (Viola da Gamba) - Jean Rondeau (Harpsichord and Organ) - 3701624510223 - Released: January 2024 - Alpha ALPHA1022
Baroque flute music enthusiasts are being well served these days. In October 2023 we saw the release of a premiere recording of the complete flute sonatas by John Stanley on Brilliant Classics, and now this superlative recording which brings together the Sonates du cinquième œuvre ajustée à la flûte traversière avec la basse by Arcangelo Corelli (1643-1713), and the premiere recording of the transcriptions for flute of the Livres de sonates à violon seul avec la basse continue by Jean-Baptiste Quentin Dit Le Jeune (c. 1690-c. 1742). All experimentation vanished in the mature works of Corelli; in them all search for form and expression terminated in an art of convincing perfection {Paul Henry Lang - Music in Western Civilization}. Even Bach showed interest in some of Corelli's trio sonatas and "Italian" concertos. And the French violin school originated from the spirit created by Corelli's sonatas. Many composers who followed, integrated the animated and virtuoso Italian style within their music. And here Anna Besson (Flute), Myriam Rignol (Viola da Gamba) and Jean Rondeau (Harpsichord and Organ), certainly bring out the music's vitality as well as its novel harmonic touches and variety. As well, the music of Jean-Baptiste Quentin, whose merits as an accomplished violinist were firmly established, imposes technical hurdles on the performer which Anna Besson takes in stride.
