JOAN CABANILLES - Organ Works - Anna Pikulska (Organ) -
Bartholomé Sánchez Organ, Cariñena (Aragón) - Hybrid-SACD - 760623236766 - Released: June 2025 - MDG 9062367-6
Spanish organist and composer Joan Cabanilles (1644-1712) is regarded as being the greatest Spanish composer from the Baroque era. From around the age of 20 he became the organist at the Valencia cathedral, a position he held until his death. His music is arguably rather rudimentary and could be viewed as one of a few links between Sweelinck and Buxtehude. It's crafted mostly around basic harmonic progression and/or development on any given tone, deployed over 2, 3 and 4 voices. Nonetheless it's fascinating to hear the early attempts at keyboard music when the instrument was still in its infancy when compared to the polyphonic vocal works of the Renaissance. The music of Joan Cabanilles can and should be appreciated for its tonal purity and formal clarity. Along with winning many awards and competitions, Polish organist Anna Pikulska is currently working on a research project in the field of Spanish organ music. The Bartholomé Sánchez Organ was extended and refurbished in 1734, and as many as 800 pipes dating back to 1482 were restored and can still be heard in the organ today. During a 1997 restoration no major changes were applied. What sets it apart are its horizontal 16' Trompeta Magna, and horizontal 8' Clarin pipes which you can hear in the first short audio clip below.
