It has often been said that Johann Sebastian Bach was so intrigued by the anecdotes he heard about the great Danish/North German organist Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707), that he set out on the long pilgrimage to Lübeck to hear him play. The experience of hearing this great musician was so overwhelming that then and there the future was established. For without Buxtehude the greater Bach is inconceivable. Bold notion but true. Another truism is that German Baroque music was highly influenced by the Italian masters of the day. As a matter of fact, the Trio Sonata (the word trio here refers to the number of contrapuntal lines) originated in Italy. Originaly conceived for two violins and harpsichord, Dietrich Buxtehude, along with other German composers, substituted a gamba for the second violin. The full and dark tone of the gamba provided an element of contrast missing in the Italians' two violin setting, which helped to compensate for the German setting's lack of spark and flamboyance.

In this new recording, the Viola da Gamba is played by Canadian musician Margaret Little (co-founder of the famous Les Voix Humaines ensemble). She joined the Ensemble Spinoza in 2021. It was co-founded by violinist Noémy Gagnon-Lafrenais and Christophe Gauthier (harpsichord and organ), both based in Quebec. The ensemble specializes in the performance of 17th century baroque music on period instruments. Compared to the numerous accounts of Buxtehude's organ works, recordings of these Trio Sonatas are few and far between.

In keeping with the religiously stoic mindset of the composer, the Ensemble Spinoza play these works in a considered manner, focused on its musical counterpoint rather than its temperament. The individual instrumental dynamics are well balanced at all times, and the musical argument always clear and articulate.
