LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN - Piano Sonatas Nos. 28 & 29 - Jin Ju (Piano) - Hybrid-SACD - 760623230665 - Released: February 2024 - MDG MDG9472306-6

Piano Sonata in A major, Op. 101
Piano Sonata in B flat major "Hammerklavier", Op. 106

What makes these interpretations of two of Beethoven's late Piano Sonatas by Chinese-born Italian pianist Jin Ju so noteworthy is that despite being meticulously precise and exacting in their technical and dynamic accuracy, they are just as equally impressive in their emotive execution, expressive detail, and deep understanding of Beethoven's intent. Take for example the Adagio sostenuto movement of the Op. 106. Jin Ju makes it seem as if Ludwig was totally self-absorbed and inspired by a visionary daydream when he conceived it. Its context completely transcends its individual notes. And her powerful pinpoint dynamic and rhythmic accuracy during the opening Allegro is simply astounding.

The instrument used in this recording also plays an important role in its impact. It's a 1901 Steinway Concert Grand Piano D which sounds perfectly balanced, tonally and dynamically, from top to bottom. I myself had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, many years ago, to play on a 1906 German built Steinway Concert Grand, and it spoke to me: "Yes, I've been around and have many dings and scratches to show for it, but I've grown wise in my old age, settled down, and dispensed with all of the rough edges." Some of Jin Ju's previous releases on the MDG label, which I've completely overlooked, include music by Schubert, Schumann and Chopin. Maybe I should revisit them.
