Massimiliano Sanca (Organ) - 2-Disc Set - 8032632230519 - Released: August 2024 - MV Cremona MVC 020-051
Trio Sonata No. 1 in E-flat major, BWV 525 Trio Sonata No. 2 in C minor, BWV 526 Trio Sonata No. 3 in D minor, BWV 527 Trio Sonata No. 4 in E minor, BWV 528 Trio Sonata No. 5 in C major, BWV 529 Trio Sonata No. 6 in G major, BWV 530 The ink (or should I say the binary and html code) hasn't completely dried yet from last month's review of Martin Neu's excellent interpretation of the Trio Sonatas for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), that already another highly impressive account of these splendid masterworks has been released. First and foremost, by performing these works on the new 2007 Ilic Colzani mechanical action Organ of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Mangher in Vallio Terme, inspired by instruments built by Gottfried Silbermann, organist Massimiliano Sanca adds authenticity to the music. Despite being of small stature with only 7 stops ranging from a 2' Octava to a 16' Posaune reed stop for the pedalboard, it produces a distinctly clear and true sound across the board, with a natural level of chiff effect. At times, if you listen attentively, you can discern the sound of the mechanical action at work. Add to this Sanca's clear and highly articulate playing, and what comes across is as pure and natural a pipe organ sound as you can get. This group of pieces usually fits on a single disc, but due to Sanca's generally relaxed tempos and the fact that he observes all repeats, it spreads onto two. This is Volume 2 of Massimiliano Sanca's projected complete cycle of all of Bach's music for the organ, and it's already showing signs that it may very well become one of the coveted sets available.
