JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH - Cantatas Nos. 106 & 182 -
Motets BWV182 & 229 - Amici Voices - 034571282756 - Released: March 2019 - Hyperion CDA68275
There is a genuine and unfeigned simplicity and humility within the sacred works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). No fire and brimstone declamations, no grandstanding, no special effects. After all his countless Cantatas were written for use during the Sunday services following the liturgical calendar. His clever use of harmony, counterpoint, subtle dissonances, vocal balance and minimal instrumental continuo were more than adequate to convey the gospel's message. And it's with simplicity and humility in mind that the ensemble Amici Voices performs these works (even their website is clean and minimal). Eight voices and about ten instrumental musicians is all they bring to the battle, but that's all they need to rival any stronger forces. Their earnest, composed and phlegmatic delivery is the perfect match to Bach's intent. Amici Voices was founded in 2012 and the booklet notes state that they regularly perform Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mass in B minor and both Passions in their characteristic small-voice formation.
